My Professional Experience and Therapeutic Approach

Hi! I'm Jess Chu and I’m the Principal Clinical Psychologist here at Reimagine Psychology Melbourne. I’ve worked in a number of mental health settings over my career – from crisis support to child protection, aged care, acute hospital and chronic pain services to my final calling, private practice.

My goal is to help my clients realise their potential and work towards the goals they’ve set for themselves. I believe that everyone deserves to live a fulfilling and meaningful life. Although it may seem challenging at the start of your therapy journey, we will work together to build your confidence and skills to tackle these obstacles. You’re more resilient than you give yourself credit for!

I aim to work in collaboration with you to decide what the most suitable way forward is. You are the expert in your life and know what works or doesn’t work for you. There are a number of ways we can go through therapy and I will provide a few options for you once we’ve clarified your goal. From there you can pick which option aligns most with the way you learn.

My Background and Beliefs

 

I have lived experience growing up in Australia as an Asian Australian woman with exposure to many different multicultural contexts. I understand the importance of cultural sensitivity and strive to ensure that this is an integral part of my work with clients. This means that I will try my best to understand your unique background and experiences in the context of your cultural identity.

I believe that it is every person's right to feel safe and be able to pursue and do what is right for them. Whether that is in the realm of their career, family life, body etc. without fear of judgement or discrimination. 

I believe that every person deserves to be able to love who they want to love. Everyone’s gender and sexual identity is personal, and I believe we should be able to express it in whatever way we feel most comfortable without fear of discrimination. I know that this is unfortunately not the reality that we live in as a society but at Reimagine Psychology Melbourne we hope to foster a safe space for those in the LGBTQIA+ community.

I also have lived experience of chronic pain for more than half of my life and can empathise with the challenges of accepting a ‘new normal’ when it comes to pacing and communicating with others about pain.
