Hello!
I'm Alec Smith
it's nice to meet you!

My Professional Experience and Therapeutic Approach
Hi, I’m Alec — a registered psychologist at Reimagine Psychology with a background in both clinical and organisational psychology. I work with adults whose psychological distress has taken shape at the intersection of their inner world and the demands placed on them by work and life.

My work is grounded in the understanding that psychological distress is not a personal failure, but a meaningful response to sustained pressure, unmet needs, and environments that has stretched us beyond our capacity to cope. My work is evidence-based, trauma-informed, and integrative. I draw on a range of therapeutic frameworks, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Schema Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing, adapting each approach to the individual and their life context rather than applying a one-size-fits-all model.

Alongside this, I bring a strong interest in how people’s histories, lived experiences, and ways of coping take shape over time, both in work, interpersonal relationships, and life. Therapy offers a space to understand what’s been happening, stabilise what feels overwhelming, and begin recovering in a way that feels steady and sustainable.

My Background and Beliefs

I grew up in regional Victoria, in a community where mental health wasn’t often talked about. That early silence taught me how people learn to survive without support — by pushing through emotional pain alone, often without the language or tools to make sense of their inner world.

Before becoming a psychologist, I worked in management consulting. I saw firsthand how perfectionism, burnout, and emotional suppression are often normalised in high-performing environments. Those experiences deepened my desire to do work that feels human, connected, and real. I wanted to create spaces where people could be authentic and heard — not judged, fixed, or rushed.

I believe therapy should feel like a partnership — where your experiences are held with care and curiosity, and your healing unfolds at your own pace. My role isn’t to give you all the answers, but to help you reconnect with your own inner wisdom, challenge what no longer serves you, and build a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
At the heart of my work is a belief in your capacity to heal — and a commitment to walking alongside you with presence, respect, and care.
