Hello!
I'm Tristan Chooi
it's nice to meet you!
My Professional Experience and Therapeutic Approach
Hello! I'm Tristan, and I am particularly interested in working with clients with ADHD as I personally relate to the challenges of living with ADHD myself. I use a strengths and empathy-based approach where I aim to guide my client’s towards developing healthier strategies to live fulfilling and balanced lives.
I've supported both adults and children with a range of common mental health concerns over the last 5+ years. I've spent four years specialising in supporting neurodiverse children and adults, particularly those on the Autism spectrum and children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
I've volunteered at Victorian Service Helplines, supporting clients grappling with anxiety, depression, and a broad range of mental health concerns. As a psychologist, I do my best work with people with ADHD of all ages, as well as working with people with personality challenges.
Using a strength-based approach, my goal is to guide clients towards cultivating healthier strategies for a balanced and fulfilling life. I prefer a conversational style in therapy, fostering a warm atmosphere where both therapist and client work together towards your goals. I am experienced in using Cognitive behavioural therapies (CBT, DBT, ACT), as well as using psychodynamic approaches. At its core however, I believe we can do our best work by building trust and connection rather than a particular psychological intervention.
I can also provide therapy in both English and Mandarin.

My Background and Beliefs
Having spent my earlier years in Southeast Asia, I have experienced firsthand the detrimental effects of conservatism on the exacerbation of mental health stigma in my community. The intricate relationship between culture, ethnicity, and mental health often can bring significant complexities. Therefore, with my personal experiences and learnings, I aim to provide my clients with support that is culturally and ethnically sensitive, all while offering insights into the factors that could be contributing to their distress.
Seeking psychological therapy is a deeply personal and often life-changing decision, and I believe I can offer a safe, supportive, and effective environment for your healing and personal growth. I draw inspiration from Buddhism, Stoicism, existentialism, and humanism, integrating these philosophies alongside my knowledge of evidence-based interventions to help my clients gain a multifaceted perspective on mental health.
I firmly believe that within every person resides an inherent inner strength, which is often overshadowed by life's challenges. Therapy goes beyond merely alleviating symptoms; it is also a journey of discovering and realizing your aspirations and potential. Regardless of where you currently stand, we will collaborate to identify your goals, and then embark on the path toward achieving them.
